Tales from the Void is an anthology series that brings horror episodes based on posts from r/NoSleep, an online forum where users submit their most terrifying fictional stories. This show is like other spooky collections of stories that you might have seen in Black Mirror or Channel Zero, but much darker, and resonates with the primitive instincts and phobias that people have. If you love psychological thrillers that leave you thinking long after they’re over, this series will get under your skin, starting with episode one: “Into the Unknown.”

The episode kicks off with a bang, introducing a strange and terrifying phenomenon: an enormous faceless cube that is completely black and is hovering in the air, in the courtyard of an apartment building. This is not just any black square – this thing devours light and looks as if it is a hole in reality. It is constructed out of a substance that is darker than the blackest black known as the Vantablack and it has a surreal feel. The tension starts to mount from the moment the movie shows an apartment complex where the story is going to unfold.

Harris, the protagonist, is among the residents who get sucked into the drama revolving around the black square. First, they are puzzled by it. What is it here for? What does it mean? But before one knows it, the feelings of distrust begin to emerge. As the square stays in the courtyard longer, even the impossible seems possible. Residents start blaming the square for weird occurrences: cars beeping at odd hours, strange noises similar to an old television that is not well tuned, and even worse things—people begin to act violently. People who used to be friends are becoming hostile, and the relations between them become somehow nervous as if something evil is looming.

In the movie, the black square is not only a strange item physically but it grows from fear, absorbing the negativity of the people who face it daily. Harris and his neighbors may be aware that something is amiss, but neither party is aware of the specific issue. Yes, what is happening to them seems to be disturbing their minds and making them question themselves about their sanity. Things start getting increasingly strange, and everyone in the building becomes suspicious, unsure whether they should fear the black shape or their neighbors. This creates suspense and prepares viewers for the final scenes that unveil the true identity of the black square. It is not just an enigma – it is a living horror. However, I will not tell you more about it because it is better to watch this movie yourself.

Certainly, there is no doubt that the game is extremely engaging due to its ability to establish a wonderful atmosphere. It makes you constantly on the edge of your seat not through things that would go bump in the night but through building up suspense to an almost unbearable level. The visuals are beautiful and the black square looks eerie, it is not only visually satisfying but it feels like you are being watched. The characters are also not simple and do not have clear, moralizing arcs like some of the heroes in boys’ adventures. Some for you will be enjoyable, others repulsive, but all of them are realistic. It also provokes your feelings with the way they act towards the situation adding to the suspense that fear and suspicion can lead to the destruction of people.

Like other popular television shows of an older generation such as Twilight Zone, the primary goal of this show is not simply to make one tense, but to challenge them. It should also be noted that the black square is not just any object; it signifies the ‘unknown’. In real life, people are afraid of something they do not know, for instance, a particular situation, other individuals, or even the future in general. This episode touches on that primal fear, demonstrating that things can go very south in a short amount of time once distrust sets in. It is a rather uncomfortable and disturbing view that shows that fear can make people listen to the voices in their heads and doubt their loved ones.

The twist of the two characters waking up in bed together is one of the favorite features of the episode because it makes you want to watch more and find out what happened. One almost gets the feeling that just as soon as one has understood the confusion, the show throws another twist and leaves one even more confused than before. It is the type of movie that leaves the audience pondering the kind of decisions they would make given the circumstances.

Yet another strong point of this episode is the discussion between David Cummings, the host of the NoSleep Podcast, and Matthew Dymerski, the author of “The Black Square,” the story the episode is based on. This interview enriches the content by providing the viewers with an understanding of how the piece was written and how it was filmed. It is just very interesting and adds a bit of realism to the show because it shows what went on during the recording of the episode.

Tales from the Void: Into the Unknown is a good start to what should be a horror series and that feeling of fear is captured from the onset. For anyone who loves to read horror that is rich in deep thoughts, with well-developed characters, scary visuals, plus a plot that brings around a relatable theme, then yes this book is for you. It’ll make you wonder: what would happen if something like the black square appeared in your neighborhood? Do you think that, you will be able to play the role of a calm person or the fear will bring everything down?

It is ideal for viewers aged 14 years and above, especially those who are interested in psychological horror. Instead of monsters or spirits, it presents how fear transforms us into vicious individuals who lose control. Just be prepared: so once you get the chance to watch it then it will be very hard for you to stop.
